Healthy body fat ranges: Women — essential fat 10–13%, athletes 14–20%, fitness 21–24%, average 25–31%, obese 32% and above. Men — essential fat 2–5%, athletes 6–13%, fitness 14–17%, average 18–24%, obese 25% and above. The US Navy method calculates body fat from neck waist and hip measurements without calipers and is accurate to within 3–4%.
Body fat percentage is a more meaningful health metric than BMI because it distinguishes between fat mass and lean muscle mass. A muscular athlete may have a high BMI but low body fat percentage. This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method — the standard used by the US military — which requires only a measuring tape and is accurate to within 3–4%.
Methodology: Uses the US Navy circumference measurement method, validated as a reliable field estimate of body fat percentage in peer-reviewed literature.
